On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Park Avenue in New York City transformed into an open-air gallery as French sculptor Michel Bassompierre unveiled his monumental exhibition, Fragile Giants, during the annual Park Avenue Day celebration. The event, held between 34th and 38th Streets, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 PM at 38th Street and Park Avenue, marking the official opening of the installation.
Organized in collaboration with the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association (MHNA), Galeries Bartoux, and the Patrons of Park Avenue (POPA), the exhibition showcases nine monumental animal sculptures, including gorillas and polar bears, crafted in Bassompierre’s signature polished bronze and luminous white resin. These sculptures aim to highlight the beauty and vulnerability of wildlife, inviting viewers to reflect on the fragility of nature.
The event drew a diverse crowd of art enthusiasts, local residents, and city officials. Attendees had the opportunity to meet Bassompierre, who engaged with guests and participated in a signing session. The festive atmosphere was further enhanced by live performances, local vendors, and community activities, embodying the spirit of Park Avenue Day.
Fragile Giants will remain on display along Park Avenue until May 2026, offering a year-long opportunity for passersby to engage with Bassompierre’s evocative work. This exhibition not only enriches the city’s cultural landscape but also underscores the importance of environmental conservation through art.
